In the Beginning - Story Creation for Younger Children at 12:30 pm

This highly interactive presentation explores story structure relating to the creation of a well-defined beginning, middle and end. Using a series of seemingly unrelated objects, students participate in creating a story in what is always a lively and fun filled session. Stories are usually based on an easily recognizable theme, such as fairy tales or adventure stories, featuring magic and so on. When conducted at school visits, although this exercise is done as a group, afterwards students are so enthusiastic that they want to create their own illustrations to go with the story and expand on the narrative that we have created together. In the following weeks, some teachers have added the children’s pictures to the story, as they create their own books and design covers for them. These have often been displayed in the classroom or sent home to parents. This workshop is also a component of my home school program for younger students.

We would like to give the spotlight to the many faces of beauty in a fashion show featuring models from all walks of life. The show will be highlighted by performances from our top singers and the comedy stylings of student emcees.

John Robert Powers is a performing arts academy offering training to selected performers in the realms of acting, modeling, singing and dancing. In addition, students are introduced to such industry executives as casting directors, agents and producers. Through these meetings, students develop networking skills and make connections with the potential to advance a performer’s career. In addition, the academy sets the teaching of interview, presentation and public speaking skills at a premium with hopes of developing confident and well rounded individuals.

Introduction to Homeschooling at 1:15 pm

Don't miss the opportunity to find out about one of the best kept secrets in education: homeschooling! In this introduction Theresa will share her experiences homeschooling, answer many frequently asked questions and bust the socialization myth. She will help to identify the pros and cons of homeschooling as well as provide some helpful tips on where and how to get started. Homeschooling is an awesome alternative to the conventional education system: "It is a world where family is number one and learning happens every day."

Theresa Kondrat Bochulak B.A. B.Comm started homeschooling in January 2002 because "It sounded too good to be true." Today she homeschools her three children aged 13, 11 and 8 with her husband Dean. Theresa created the Homeschooler's Guide magazine in July 2004 specifically to increase awareness about homeschooling as an education option and to support parents in their homeschooling journey. After five years in print the Homeschooler's Guide continues to provide parents with ideas, solutions and support (www.homeschoolersguide.ca). Theresa also organizes the Calgary Education Fair each year to bring education resources directly to parents. She is a firm believer that all education starts at home.

Financing Education at 2:15 pm

As we know education is expensive and it is crucial to be informed on how to save and invest for future education. The general slogan is usually “The sooner the better” but what if you couldn’t save sooner? Is it too late to start saving now?

Let’s get together to discuss the three easiest, most effective savings and investments vehicles out there today and how they can benefit you! We’ll talk about how to best use the Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), Tax Free Savings Account (TSFA) and the Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). Three simple, easy to access financial tools that can make a huge difference to your child’s education options.
